I practically grew up in a salon. My mom was a hairstylist, and from as early as I can remember, I needed to be there. I’d beg her to take me with her, promising I’d help—but really, I just wanted to watch. There was something mesmerizing about it all.
It wasn’t just about hair—it was about people. I loved watching clients walk in one way and leave completely transformed, not just in looks but in confidence. That spark they got when they saw themselves in the mirror? That’s what hooked me. That’s when I knew—this is what I want to do.
Apparently my passion was so strong, it showed up even in my childhood. I was told at a family birthday party, I got so excited about cutting hair that I had my cousins lined up for a trim! Midway through, everyone started noticing the fresh cuts, and that’s when the realization hit—my mom had to step in and fix things because, well, I was just a kid with no clue what I was doing. But even then, It showed I was on to something.
Fast forward to 2008, my senior year of high school. On day one, I walked into the counselor’s office and asked about cosmetology school. By day two, I was enrolled. No hesitation—just full speed ahead.
But I couldn’t have done it alone. My dad was my rock. With his support, I was able to start cosmetology school. He was always there, encouraging me, believing in me, and helping me make this dream a reality. Without him, I wouldn’t be here. I carry so much gratitude for his endless love and support.
My schedule back then? Brutal.
Monday through Friday, I’d wake up, take my siblings to school, then head to class from 7:45 AM to noon. After that, I’d rush home, pick up my mom (since we shared a car), grab a quick bite, and then she’d drop me off at cosmetology school from 1 PM to 5 PM. Saturdays? Full-time, 9 AM to 5 PM.
After graduating, I jumped right in, helping my mom with clients when she was overbooked while growing my own clientele in a booth rental salon. One of the moments that made me realize this was the career for me came three years into working at my first salon. By then, I had built my presence, and when I started getting calls to work on exciting projects, it hit me: “Okay, this is real.” To this day, I still get those calls, which always remind me why I love what I do.
Every day I show up to work, I carry a piece of my mom with me. She started it all, and her memory is always with me—fueling my passion. I know she’s looking down, seeing the connections I build with my clients, the art I create, and the way her legacy lives on in everything I do. She sparked this journey for me, and every transformation, every moment of joy I help create, is a reminder that it’s all because of her.
And my dad? He’s still here, cheering me on, just as he always has. I couldn’t have done this without him, and I love him so much. I love them both so much.
Thank you, Mom and Dad, for everything—you are the heart of my story.
